The End of a Wondrous Year
End of Year Banquet, Scholarships and Awards
Dec 16, 2005
On Saturday, November 26, the Reading Buccaneers celebrated the official end to their magical 2005 season in grand style with their Annual Banquet and Celebration. This event is ordinarily an enjoyable, emotional culmination of the year, but was all the more special this year as it closed the greatest season in the Buccaneers' 49-year history. The event, held at the Inn at Reading, was attended by close to 300 people, including many 2005 members, staff, Buccaneer alumni, family members, local dignitaries and DCA officials. The banquet began with a lively social hour followed by a sumptuous buffet dinner.
After dinner, it was time for official business, always the highlight of the evening. First, the corps inducted four well-deserving members into the Reading Buccaneers Hall of Fame. Randy Kerschner, Joel Miller, Curt Rissmiller and Lois Tierno joined 53 other Buccaneer legends as Hall-of-Famers.
Next, the corps presented its annual Member/Staff Awards.

DCA President Gil Silva delivered an inspirational address to the crowd, and then presented Corps Director James C. Gruber with the Director of the Year award, which was awarded to Jimmy by his fellow corps directors.
Alex Bainbridge was the recipient of the 2005 Buccaneers' Academic Scholarship. Alex received her $1000 prize with a generous ovation from the crowd.
Judith L. Schwank, Chairperson of the Berks County Board of Commissioners, delivered a proclamation congratulating the Buccaneers on their DCA championship. Proclamations were also delivered on behalf of Pennsylvania State Senator Michael A. O'Pake and Reading Mayor Thomas M. McMahon, who proclaimed November 26, 2005 to be "Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps Day" in the City of Reading.
The official program ended with a rousing rendition of the corps song, and the tears were flowing freely.
Those in attendance were then treated to three very special surprises, courtesy of Media Manager Wayne Van Ostenbridge. First was an emotional DVD photo montage depicting the entire 2005 season, from Membership Day 2005 to DCA Finals, set to the source music for the Bucs' 2005 Variations in B show. Then, the crowd enjoyed a full viewing of the Bucs' 2005 Finals performance. Finally, the corps paid tribute to its last championship season with a video of the 1980 Buccaneers in action.
The fun and fellowship continued well into the night as the Buccaneers eagerly anticipated Membership Day 2006, which took place the next day.
